Black & Blues was inspired by the writings of naturalist and essayist, Loren Eiseley, who was one of this country's great public intellectuals. This work is Davidson's first orchestral work and enjoyed success with a number of conductors andchamber orchestras around the USA. The titles of the movements are taken from chapter names in Eiseley's book, The Immense Journey: I. Dancing with Cranes, II. Willy, III. Judgment of the Birds.

Commissioned by Jeanyne and John Slettom for their daughters; premiered by conductor Oliver Knussen and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Score and parts are available for rent.
