DOWNLOAD A Most Knowing Woman (An exposition of the Seven Elements of Comedy) [oboe, bass; 2019] Commissioned by OboeBass!, this work is an adaptation of one of Stephen Foster's least performed songs, "My Wife is a Most Knowing Woman."
At Her Rest (for Martha Kaemmer) [three versions: cello quartet; viola, 2 celli, bass; OR piano; 2020] Ms. Kaemmer and her husband, Art, were beloved patrons of the arts living in Minnesota. This deploration was composed on the news of her passing.

Anniversary Sonata [oboe, guitar; 1992] Commissioned to celebrate the marriage of Sandra and Richard Jacobson's marriage. The three movements describe the arc of their relationship: courtship, wedding, and marriage. Available the CD on the 10,000 Lakes label.

Around Columbia [violin, viola, cello; 1987] Commissioned by Ensemble Capriccio and available on the CRI label. The three movements take their names from cities and small towns around Columbia, Missouri: Centralia, Easley, Mexico and Bolivar (pronounced BALL-ih-ver). Written at the age of 34, the piece represents a declared independence from an academic practice of composition exemplified at Columbia University at the time. The last movement, the Mexico-Bolivar Tango, can be found in different versions for piano trio, chamber orchestra and for string trio.

DOWNLOAD BIG BOOK: Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity [clarinet, 2 percussion, piano; 2008] The first movement of an evening-long set of pieces based on the Gospel of St. Matthew and Alcoholic's Anonymous' BIG BOOK. The work has yet to receive its premiere; commissioned by St. John's University (Collegeville MN) to honor the St. John's Manuscript of the Gospels. Available on the Innova label.

BIG BOOK: Complete [flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, French horn, 2 violins, viola, cello, bass, 2 percussionists, piano; in-process]
Conceived as an evening-long experience with two literary inspirations: St. Mark's Gospel as illuminated in the St. John's Bible and the BIG BOOK widely-known as the bible for Alcoholics Anonymous. The piano is the central presence at the the Last Supper table with 12 others sitting in the circle. See above: Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity (the second in the AA 12-step program to recovery). The work has not received its complete premiere. |

BIG BOOK: Sketches [cello, piano] Originally created in preparation for a larger evening-long piece for 13 instruments inspired by the St. John's Bible in Collegeville, Minnesota and by the BIG BOOK widely-known as the bible for Alcoholics Anonymous. The six-movement "Sketches" outline the musical ideas contained in the larger composition.

Fanfare for the Union Depot [3 trumpets, 4 horns, 3 trombones, bass trombone, tuba; 1985] Premiered at the opening of the renovated St. Paul MN Union Depot.

DOWNLOAD How Can I Keep from Singing [oboe, cello, piano; 1995] In the form of a quodlibet made up of 17 melodies, it was commissioned to honor Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Rosemary Wahl on her retirement and to celebrate the women's singing group she loved to be part of.

Johann & Joe [solo violin; 1984] Inspired by the music and artistry of Johann Sebastian Bach and the jazz violinist Joe Venuti.

Kitty Hawk [violin, piano OR flute, piano; 1987] Commissioned by the Schubert Club. Inspired by the Robert Frost poem who considered it one of his best late poems.

The Land Where One Never Dies [violin, cello, piano and narrator; 1982] Commissioned by the Saint Anthony Park Music in the Parks. The narration is translated by the composer from the original Veronese.

DOWNLOAD Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service [cello, piano; 2019] Commissioned and premiered for the wedding of Peter and Mary Dahlen in 1989 in its original setting for SATB choir and string trio. An additional 2-part choir and organ setting has been published by Boosey & Hawkes (OCTB6806).

Lover's Lament arrangement [oboe, guitar; 1992] This is the second movement of the Anniversary Sonata (listed above) and has three other versions: soprano-guitar, soprano-piano. From Davidson's collection of American Songs first conceived by Carl Sandburg in his American Songbag.

Mexico-Bolivar Tango [oboe, violin, piano OR violin, viola, cello; 1989] There is also a chamber orchestra version.
Taken from the string trio Around Columbia, Mexico, Missouri is where the regional high school music contest was held every Spring: classical music, only. Bolivar, Missouri is a town with no pretensions and a love of C&W music. This music is demonstrates the collision of the two musics.
