[bad things happen to] Tiny Toy Windups (for purchase)
[instrumentation: 1.2.1.1-2.1.0.0-perc (1)-strings; 2015] 7 minutes Commissioned by conductor Jay Fishman for the Minnesota Sinfonia with support from the McKnight Foundation. Randall collects tiny plastic windup toys. This one-movement work belongs to a number of compositions in Mr. Davidson's catalogue that portray power differentials between weak and strong, large and small, loud and soft forces. The strings begin the work without direction from the podium. As the music gains momentum, the conductor and percussionist punctuate the harmony of the group by pitting sections of the orchestra against each other until, finally, the two leave the stage arm-in-arm triumphant in controlling everyone. A brief coda follows (after the audience response): the strings rise from the silence, persistent and once again without a conductor.

Black & Blues (for rent)
[1.2.1.2-2.0.0.0-perc.pn-strings: 6 6 4 4 2; 1984] 24 minutes. Commissioned by Jeanyne and John Slettom for their daughters, Malena and Linnea; premiered by Oliver Knussen and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; performed more than 25 times by the SPCO. The work was inspired by the writings of naturalist, Loren Eiseley (All the Strange Hours, The Immense Journey and The Night Country). The titles of the three movements are taken from chapter titles: "Crane Dancing," "Willy" and "Judgment of the Birds." Black & Blues is a bruising, a mourning, and an affirmation. "I sometimes think that [people] and their thoughts are like jack-o-lanterns upheld on poles at Halloween. they float and grin awhile before some dark unanswering window, and then, like hollow pumpkins, they are taken down, dismantled, and cast out. Poor old heads, there was only a small light in them and a rotund expansiveness that soon withered. Our own case is no better."
Loren Eiseley, All the Strange Hours
