A blog about the music that moves Randall right now.

A colleague suggested an Irish ensemble's recording to me.
I listened to it and was mesmerized by this piece by Nico Muhly.

This was the original idea behind "moving company." A blurb about a piece of music; a hook to peak interest. You could decide to listen to the music...or not.

Now I have a plan. I think this will become a blog.

College Radio
I used to host a program at a small college FM radio station at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa scheduled every Thursday night from 7-10pm.
The station had a 10-watt transmitter in the tower of the campus church. If the wind was blow just right it might reach the outskirts of campus.

What was
once lo-risk, lo-power, lo-cal radio is now almost entirely
internet-based: lo-risk, lo-cal, no-power.

There are very few "live" shows with a host introducing a curated list of music. Stations are a free-form format conforming to what college students have always been interested in; progressive pop music with occasional speckles of "roots" or "world" music or "off-the-beaten path" esoterica.

Program directors at these "independent" college radio stations in the midwest complain they're hard-pressed to find any volunteer DJs.
There's no wonder.

Any college freshman can host their own mix tape on the internet.
And who has the time to properly prepare notes and background for a 3 or 4 hour shift.

My idea
So...I plan on moving company morphing into my college radio experience
a la 1973, one piece of music at a time, I won't share much more about my idea right now, but will be experimenting here with what I hope will be an interesting format:
simply listen to music that currently moves me (all kinds)
or
listen/watch how I think some music creates magic.
